In the following parts, the ethical issues relating to the sexualization, especially of women in advertisements, have been researched upon. There has been an increase in the sexualization of females in advertisements to promote a product, and such sexualization is not ethical. Test To See If This Hypothesis Is Correct In order to determine if the stated hypothesis is right or wrong, the use of women in the advertisements would be analyzed. The type of advertisements in which the women are used, and how their sexualization helps in the promotion of the product would be examined to determine if the hypothesis is actually correct. Moreover, the theories associated with objectification and sexualization would also be elucidated to affirm the hypothesis. Lastly, the consequences of such sexualization have also been determined to show that such ads are unethical. Methodology In order to carry out this research, a deductive approach has been used, as this study determines that its premises as true. And secondary data has been used, in form of news articles, journals and books to analyze the presence of sexualization in advertisements. The use of this form of data will help in establishing the unethical point of view of such ads. A case study is also undertaken to prove the hypothesis. This case study taken here is of the advertisement of The Axe Effect, where it can be easily seen that the women are treated as merely an object and are sexualized to sell the product. By examining the type of ads in which women are being sexualized, it can be determined that the women are objectified just to attract the attention of the consumers. By using the theory of sex sells the makers of the advertisements often objectify the women, as they view that this would garner the attention and help in the sale of the product (Attwood, 2014). The theories of objectification have highlighted that women are treated as an object and such an object can be used in any form. The theories of sexual objectification highlight that a person is treated as an instrument of sexual pleasure. Even though men are also objectified, but such numbers are quite less (Adams, 2015). The sexualization of the women, on the other hand, has been present since generations and is also expected to continue. These theories highlight the unethical aspect of such advertisements. A huge brand which is involved in the sexualization in their ads, so as to sell their product is AXE. AXE is one of the famous international brands of the male grooming products, and their product range includes deodorants, shower gels, styling products, fragrance sprays, antiperspirants, and shampoos (Unilever, 2016). AXE was first introduced in the 1983 in France by Unilever, which is a multi-billion dollar consumer goods company. After the success of AXE in Europe and Latin America, it was introduced in USA in 2002. The sale of AXE brand is done by making the males believe in the notion that by using their products, all the women would come running towards them, and this is known as The AXE Effect (Unilever USA, 2016). In one of the ads of AXE, titled Billions, a number of women running in an animalistic manner through the forest or are swimming madly across the ocean, so as to reach a man who is shown as bathing himself in the AXE deodorant (Luzakain, 2010). The ad shows the desperation of women that they exist solely for the purpose of pleasing the men. Moreover, the ad uses the clichd performance, which is used not only in the advertisements but also in music videos also, just to sell the product. This performance includes the camera angles, wet bodies, provocative clothing, and the fragmentation to sexualize, as well as, objectify the women. The derogatory imagination is the main appeal behind such ads and these dehumanize the women (Mooij, 2013). In another ad, where the chocolate ice cream fragrance was to be promoted, the women was shown as licking a man after using that particular scented body spray (Pride Ferrell, 2016). Findings The target audience of such products of AXE is young men, who are focused upon girls. The psychological features include masculinity, seductiveness and desirability. The advertisements of AXE are aimed at connecting the action of attracting a woman to the AXE products. By creating a notion of attracting the women by use of this product, the men are attracted towards these products (Pride Ferrell, 2016). But these ads are wrong on ethical grounds. The ads are only aimed at attracting more targeted audience, and forget about the ethical implications of it. By sexualizing and objectifying the women, the profits are achieved. The women are depicted as a sexually object which is a bad example to be set for the already patriarchal society, as well as, demoralizing (BBC, 2007). The view that is being sold here is that the sole objective of the women of this earth is to be with and please a man, along with, the standard and image of beauty (Krayer, Ingledew Iphofen, 2008). The image created in the eyes of society is one where the women have flawless features and are simply the object of mans sexual satisfaction. The view of society is not the only view that has been changed regarding a beautiful woman; the view of the women towards themselves has also changed throughout the years. Incidents of body shamming, due to the negative body image have increased manifolds, and this is a recurrent topic of the present age. Women feel shameful due to their shape and size and develop the feelings of awkwardness, shame and even anxiety (Brown University, 2015). The analysis of the AXE advertisement depicts the sexualization of women as the ad emphasizes over the excessive sexuality of women, in addition to how it attracts all men. The ad here clearly suggests that the men are attracted towards sexually appealing women, in comparison to the casually or ordinarily dressed women. By showing all the women in bikini suits, who run towards the man in an animalistic manner, they are shown as the sex objects as per the societal norms, which is clearly a negative connotation of women (Wang, 2016). These ads also engage in the stereotyping of the men (Adams, 2015). The men are depicted as having the only aim of getting more and more girls, and quenching their sexual desires. They are depicted in such manner as the makers believe that the targeted audience would do anything to get a girl, and that by showing such ads, the targeted consumer would rush to buy their product (Pride Ferrell, 2016). And this makes these advertisements wrong on ethical grounds again, as this is misleading for the audience. Even though these ads have been successful for the company, but the society has not seen the positivity of them. The view that has been created through such ads is quite specific. So, not only the women are sexualized in such ads, but also create the image of a beautiful woman. The image of women that is portrayed through such ads is that women are brainless object, and their sole aim is to please men. The women, in the advertisements these days are treated as a sexual object, just so that the sale of the product can increase (Kilbourne, 2012). Moreover, an image of beautiful woman being flawless, slim and fit, has been embedded in the minds of the society, which has resulted in the negative body image of the women. The case study further highlighted how the women are objectified in the ads. The Billions ad showed the women running crazily after a man using the AXE product, in a provocative manner. The only aim of this ad was to garner targeted audiences attention and the ethical implications were simply ignored. And this has been done constantly by AXE in all of its advertisements. This sexualization is not only present in the ads of this product, but also in the ads of various products. As highlighted above, such sexualization is also present in music videos, where the women are objectified and shown in a derogatory manner (Mischner et al., 2013). There are people who view this objectification as liberalization of women, but this paper does not hold that view. The reasons for the rejection of this view are simple, the objectification results in a negative image of women, where they have no respect and are portrayed as a product, and this dehumanizes them (Infanger Sczesny, 2014). Arguments for and Against Horse Slaughter While animal advocates argue against horse slaughter, some horse breeders and owners say that horse slaughter is a necessary evil. According to The Morning News, â€Å"a recent national poll found that almost 70 percent of Americans support a federal ban on horse slaughter for human consumption.† As of May 2009, there are no slaughterhouses killing horses for human consumption in the United States. There is now a federal bill pending that would prohibit horse slaughter in the US and would prohibit the transport of live horses for slaughter. While this federal bill is pending, several individual states are considering horse slaughterhouses. A Montana bill allowing horse slaughter and protecting potential slaughterhouse owners became law in April 2009. A bill modeled on the Montana law is now pending in Tennessee. Slaughter for Human Consumption Horses were being slaughtered for human consumption in the US as recently as 2007. In 2005, Congress had voted to withhold funding for USDA inspections of horse meat. This move should have stopped horse slaughter because the meat cannot be sold for human consumption without USDA inspections, but the USDA responded by adopting new rules that allowed the slaughterhouses to pay for the inspections themselves. A 2007 court ruling ordered the USDA to stop the inspections. Horses Still Being Slaughtered Although horses are no longer slaughtered for human consumption in the US, live horses are still shipped to foreign slaughterhouses. According to Keith Dane, Director of Equine Protection for the Humane Society of the US, about 100,000 live horses are shipped to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses each year, and the meat is sold in Belgium, France, and other countries. A lesser-known issue is that of horse slaughter for pet food and for zoos to feed to carnivores. According to Dane, these facilities are not required to be inspected by the USDA, so statistics are not available. The existence of such facilities usually goes unnoticed until there are a cruelty allegation and investigation. The International Society for the Protection of Exotic Animal Kind and Livestock, Inc. alleges that one such slaughterhouse in New Jersey kills the horses in an inhumane manner, and the case is still under investigation. According to Dane, most major pet food companies do not use horse meat, so there’s little chance of buying cat or dog food that supports horse slaughter. There are many reasons a breeder or owner may decide to sell a specific horse for slaughter, but on a macro level, the problem is overbreeding. Arguments For Horse Slaughter Some view horse slaughter as a necessary evil, to humanely dispose of unwanted horses. Unlike dogs and cats, unwanted horses cannot be dropped off at the local animal shelter. Sanctuaries for horses do exist, but there are not enough of them. Euthanasia is not always financially feasible. Having the horse humanely euthanized and then having the body of a 1,200-pound animal disposed of or transported to a rendering plant is expensive, sometimes prohibitively so. Rendering plants that turn horses into fertilizer and industrial products will accept carcasses, but do not pay for them. Some argue that the alternative to horse slaughter is neglect and abandonment. Horse slaughter proponents argue that horses should be treated no differently from cows, pigs or chickens, and there is no reason horses should not be slaughtered for human consumption. Arguments Against Horse Slaughter Animal rights activists do not believe in killing any animals for food, but there are several arguments that apply specifically to horses. Horse slaughter increases prices and profits for horse breeding. If there is no profitable or easy way to dispose of unwanted horses, fewer horses will be bred. As reported in the Morning News, Before slaughterhouses closed, ranchers knew they could get $1 per pound for the meat. The same meat is now worth only about 20 cents per pound[...] Ranchers are also simply getting out of the horse business, said Ross Lockhart, owner of Stockman’s Pride in Bentonville. He used to raise registered quarter horses but hasn’t bred anything for the past two years. Many Americans believe horses are special and should be treated more like companion animals than livestock. Neglect and abandonment do not increase when slaughterhouses close. According to the International Fund for Horses: California banned horse slaughter in 1998. California has experienced no increase in abuse case, and even noted a decrease 3 years following the ban. During the 4 years that [the Cavel slaughterhouse] was closed, Illinois saw a noticeable decrease in abuse and/or neglect cases. Texas, which had the only two slaughter plants in 2003, had among the nations highest rates of cruelty and theft. Some believe that horse slaughter is unusually cruel. At some slaughterhouses, horses are first stunned with a captive bolt gun, then bled to death. However, the horses are sometimes improperly stunned and are sometimes skinned and bled while still conscious. Allowing horse slaughter creates another source of profit for thoroughbred breeders, thereby supporting horse racing, to which many animal advocates object. Several major horse racetracks oppose horse slaughter. There are about 9 million domestic horses in the US, and approximately one percent of that number are sent to foreign slaughterhouses each year. If shipping live horses for slaughter were banned, that relatively small number of horses could be absorbed by the horse community in the US. The Upshot Whether prohibiting the export of live horses for slaughter will lead to neglect and abandonment remains to be seen, especially in an economy where foreclosures threaten all types of companion animals. However, several major racetracks oppose horse slaughter and taking away an incentive for breeding or overbreeding is a powerful argument against horse slaughter.

As such, my job is to spot inaccuracies, correct typos, clean up grammar and write headlines. I spend most of my time working at the broadsheets, where the copy is of very high quality. Even so, there are still plenty of opportunities for words to go crazy and cause mayhem, as they have a way of doing. Ill be keeping an eye out while Im on my rounds, and reporting in to Emphasis from time to time on the mistakes I find. After all, what better way to learn than from the mistakes of others? (Far less painful than ones own!) This week From triplets to tautology, the wrong Teresa to the wrong Labour politician, heres a round-up of a few corkers I spotted this week. Youve probably heard the nursery rhyme As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives; each wife held seven sacks, each sack had seven cats Well, I was reminded of that when I spotted this sentence, which features a common tautology (tautology: using multiple words to describe the same thing). Farhana Shaukat, a mother of three triplets, gave a clue as to why the pupils were queuing up outside. They get bored with the holidays, she said. Three triplets? So how many were going to St Ives three or nine? Triplets only has one meaning: three children born at the same time. The addition of three is unnecessary, but surprisingly common (along with the other favourite two twins). Its not a big mistake, by any means. But its worth avoiding even if only for the reason that some stickler will always pick you up on it otherwise (erm, yes, thats me). Health risk Moving on swiftly, we go from an extraneous word to a missing word and this time, an important one. This is a good example of how one word can completely change the meaning of a sentence. And its so easy to do, especially when youre in full flow and thinking faster than you can write. The following was very nearly published as the headline to a piece on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. Spot the missing word. World Trade Centre attacks left rescuers and bystanders with raised risk of physical and mental health, Lancet reveals Its not only missing words that can cause mischief letters can be equally troublesome. The following sentence has a letter missing. Can you spot it? The inquiry, ordered by Teresa May, is being carried out by Her Majestys Inspectorate of Constabulary. Its an h. The home secretary is a Theresa, not a Teresa. Pah! you say. Thats just a typo, nothing to sweat over. And yes, thats fair. But a Teresa May does exist, and she has a profession that our Theresa probably wouldnt appreciate being associated with. Ahem. (Shes a porn star.) Lets play spot the letter again, in a similarly scandalous vein. This time, though, youre looking for an extra one, not a missing one. Ready? This month a 51-year-old officer will answer police bail after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public officer over alleged unauthorised leaks from the Operation Weeting phone-hacking inquiry. Misconduct in a whaaat? Madre mia! That should, needless to say, read misconduct in a public office. Brown, in the farmhouse, with the Okay, thats more than enough smut. Back to serious things. This final example is one of those mistakes that is terrifyingly easy to make when youve been working on something at length and suddenly your brain turns bad and attacks you. This came at the end of a very long and detailed story on Alistair Darlings new book, in which the words Brown and Darling occurred many times over, and always in the right place until That weekend, Brown reveals that he held a secret meeting with Miliband at a farmhouse in Essex. Grammatically, its fine. No typos, no dodgy apostrophes. So whats the problem? Simply that its wrong. It was Darling, not Brown, who revealed and attended the secret meeting and the scary truth is that no spellcheck can pick up that kind of (potentially libellous) mistake. The moral of the story? Proofread, proofread and proofread. Ideally, ask someone else to proofread for you and dont feel bad if they pick up errors. None of the mistakes Ive mentioned above were made through ignorance or stupidity simply through human error. We all make em. The best protection is knowing it. The discussion received a new impetus at the release of the controversial abortion drug RU-486, "a pill to increase access to abortions and let women get them privately from their own doctor instead of facing shouting protesters at clinics."2 As is the case with all controversial issues, there are very passionate people on both sides of the fence. Unfortunately, a heated discussion on abortion can easily and quickly turn into a battle of rhetoric rather than a dialectic of reason. But the guiding light in such a discussion must always be reason, not rhetoric or other fallacies, for only reason can solve this issue and judge which side is correct. In this brief essay, I shall attempt to clear away some of the confusion present in typical abortion debates by cooling the rhetoric with reason enlightened by scientific facts. Specifically, I will examine two common pro-abortion arguments made by Mary Anne Warren and Judith Jarvis Thomson and demonstrate that they cannot stand up to rational scrutiny and therefore fail to justify abortion. I shall also use a "quadrilemma" argument similar to that of Peter Kreeft's to show that, aside from all specific argumentation, abortion cannot be morally justified. Before even beginning to discuss the issue of abortion, it is imperative to agree upon a starting point from which to reason.
