Arguments for and Against Horse Slaughter

Arguments for and Against Horse Slaughter While animal advocates argue against horse slaughter, some horse breeders and owners say that horse slaughter is a necessary evil. According to The Morning News, â€Å"a recent national poll found that almost 70 percent of Americans support a federal ban on horse slaughter for human consumption.† As of May 2009, there are no slaughterhouses killing horses for human consumption in the United States. There is now a federal bill pending that would prohibit horse slaughter in the US and would prohibit the transport of live horses for slaughter. While this federal bill is pending, several individual states are considering horse slaughterhouses. A Montana bill allowing horse slaughter and protecting potential slaughterhouse owners became law in April 2009. A bill modeled on the Montana law is now pending in Tennessee. Slaughter for Human Consumption Horses were being slaughtered for human consumption in the US as recently as 2007. In 2005, Congress had voted to withhold funding for USDA inspections of horse meat. This move should have stopped horse slaughter because the meat cannot be sold for human consumption without USDA inspections, but the USDA responded by adopting new rules that allowed the slaughterhouses to pay for the inspections themselves. A 2007 court ruling ordered the USDA to stop the inspections. Horses Still Being Slaughtered Although horses are no longer slaughtered for human consumption in the US, live horses are still shipped to foreign slaughterhouses. According to Keith Dane, Director of Equine Protection for the Humane Society of the US, about 100,000 live horses are shipped to Canadian and Mexican slaughterhouses each year, and the meat is sold in Belgium, France, and other countries. A lesser-known issue is that of horse slaughter for pet food and for zoos to feed to carnivores. According to Dane, these facilities are not required to be inspected by the USDA, so statistics are not available. The existence of such facilities usually goes unnoticed until there are a cruelty allegation and investigation. The International Society for the Protection of Exotic Animal Kind and Livestock, Inc. alleges that one such slaughterhouse in New Jersey kills the horses in an inhumane manner, and the case is still under investigation. According to Dane, most major pet food companies do not use horse meat, so there’s little chance of buying cat or dog food that supports horse slaughter. There are many reasons a breeder or owner may decide to sell a specific horse for slaughter, but on a macro level, the problem is overbreeding. Arguments For Horse Slaughter Some view horse slaughter as a necessary evil, to humanely dispose of unwanted horses. Unlike dogs and cats, unwanted horses cannot be dropped off at the local animal shelter. Sanctuaries for horses do exist, but there are not enough of them. Euthanasia is not always financially feasible. Having the horse humanely euthanized and then having the body of a 1,200-pound animal disposed of or transported to a rendering plant is expensive, sometimes prohibitively so. Rendering plants that turn horses into fertilizer and industrial products will accept carcasses, but do not pay for them. Some argue that the alternative to horse slaughter is neglect and abandonment. Horse slaughter proponents argue that horses should be treated no differently from cows, pigs or chickens, and there is no reason horses should not be slaughtered for human consumption. Arguments Against Horse Slaughter Animal rights activists do not believe in killing any animals for food, but there are several arguments that apply specifically to horses. Horse slaughter increases prices and profits for horse breeding. If there is no profitable or easy way to dispose of unwanted horses, fewer horses will be bred. As reported in the Morning News, Before slaughterhouses closed, ranchers knew they could get $1 per pound for the meat. The same meat is now worth only about 20 cents per pound[...] Ranchers are also simply getting out of the horse business, said Ross Lockhart, owner of Stockman’s Pride in Bentonville. He used to raise registered quarter horses but hasn’t bred anything for the past two years. Many Americans believe horses are special and should be treated more like companion animals than livestock. Neglect and abandonment do not increase when slaughterhouses close. According to the International Fund for Horses: California banned horse slaughter in 1998. California has experienced no increase in abuse case, and even noted a decrease 3 years following the ban. During the 4 years that [the Cavel slaughterhouse] was closed, Illinois saw a noticeable decrease in abuse and/or neglect cases. Texas, which had the only two slaughter plants in 2003, had among the nations highest rates of cruelty and theft. Some believe that horse slaughter is unusually cruel. At some slaughterhouses, horses are first stunned with a captive bolt gun, then bled to death. However, the horses are sometimes improperly stunned and are sometimes skinned and bled while still conscious. Allowing horse slaughter creates another source of profit for thoroughbred breeders, thereby supporting horse racing, to which many animal advocates object. Several major horse racetracks oppose horse slaughter. There are about 9 million domestic horses in the US, and approximately one percent of that number are sent to foreign slaughterhouses each year. If shipping live horses for slaughter were banned, that relatively small number of horses could be absorbed by the horse community in the US. The Upshot Whether prohibiting the export of live horses for slaughter will lead to neglect and abandonment remains to be seen, especially in an economy where foreclosures threaten all types of companion animals. However, several major racetracks oppose horse slaughter and taking away an incentive for breeding or overbreeding is a powerful argument against horse slaughter.

What the sub-editor saw - Emphasis

What the sub-editor saw What the sub-editor saw Hello, Im Cathy, and Im a sub-editor (scourge of the newsroom, pedant and dictionary botherer). As such, my job is to spot inaccuracies, correct typos, clean up grammar and write headlines. I spend most of my time working at the broadsheets, where the copy is of very high quality. Even so, there are still plenty of opportunities for words to go crazy and cause mayhem, as they have a way of doing. Ill be keeping an eye out while Im on my rounds, and reporting in to Emphasis from time to time on the mistakes I find. After all, what better way to learn than from the mistakes of others? (Far less painful than ones own!) This week From triplets to tautology, the wrong Teresa to the wrong Labour politician, heres a round-up of a few corkers I spotted this week. Youve probably heard the nursery rhyme As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives; each wife held seven sacks, each sack had seven cats Well, I was reminded of that when I spotted this sentence, which features a common tautology (tautology: using multiple words to describe the same thing). Farhana Shaukat, a mother of three triplets, gave a clue as to why the pupils were queuing up outside. They get bored with the holidays, she said. Three triplets? So how many were going to St Ives three or nine? Triplets only has one meaning: three children born at the same time. The addition of three is unnecessary, but surprisingly common (along with the other favourite two twins). Its not a big mistake, by any means. But its worth avoiding even if only for the reason that some stickler will always pick you up on it otherwise (erm, yes, thats me). Health risk Moving on swiftly, we go from an extraneous word to a missing word and this time, an important one. This is a good example of how one word can completely change the meaning of a sentence. And its so easy to do, especially when youre in full flow and thinking faster than you can write. The following was very nearly published as the headline to a piece on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. Spot the missing word. World Trade Centre attacks left rescuers and bystanders with raised risk of physical and mental health, Lancet reveals Its not only missing words that can cause mischief letters can be equally troublesome. The following sentence has a letter missing. Can you spot it? The inquiry, ordered by Teresa May, is being carried out by Her Majestys Inspectorate of Constabulary. Its an h. The home secretary is a Theresa, not a Teresa. Pah! you say. Thats just a typo, nothing to sweat over. And yes, thats fair. But a Teresa May does exist, and she has a profession that our Theresa probably wouldnt appreciate being associated with. Ahem. (Shes a porn star.) Lets play spot the letter again, in a similarly scandalous vein. This time, though, youre looking for an extra one, not a missing one. Ready? This month a 51-year-old officer will answer police bail after being arrested on suspicion of misconduct in a public officer over alleged unauthorised leaks from the Operation Weeting phone-hacking inquiry. Misconduct in a whaaat? Madre mia! That should, needless to say, read misconduct in a public office. Brown, in the farmhouse, with the Okay, thats more than enough smut. Back to serious things. This final example is one of those mistakes that is terrifyingly easy to make when youve been working on something at length and suddenly your brain turns bad and attacks you. This came at the end of a very long and detailed story on Alistair Darlings new book, in which the words Brown and Darling occurred many times over, and always in the right place until That weekend, Brown reveals that he held a secret meeting with Miliband at a farmhouse in Essex. Grammatically, its fine. No typos, no dodgy apostrophes. So whats the problem? Simply that its wrong. It was Darling, not Brown, who revealed and attended the secret meeting and the scary truth is that no spellcheck can pick up that kind of (potentially libellous) mistake. The moral of the story? Proofread, proofread and proofread. Ideally, ask someone else to proofread for you and dont feel bad if they pick up errors. None of the mistakes Ive mentioned above were made through ignorance or stupidity simply through human error. We all make em. The best protection is knowing it. This is a guest blog post by Cathy Relf, a freelance sub-editor.

Envirnmental impact analysis Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Envirnmental impact analysis - Essay Example The Nestle South project intends to develop mixed use facilities including residential properties, offices, retail, cafe, community centre, highway infrastructure and other ancillary works with approval subject to Section 106 Agreement (Peter 2009). Background The site was first developed in 1890 for the manufacture of cocoa and confectionary. In 2006 Nestle Rowntree expressed intention to upgrade and improve the northern part leaving the southern part for future development. The redevelopment is part of a capital investment project facilitating upgrading works and safeguarding the employment of 1800 employees. In response to the expression of interest to develop the site, the Council produced and adopted a Development Brief highlighting the Council’s vision, aspirations, objectives and requirements (Templeton and Taubenfeld 1987). The Council’s vision for the site is to create an inclusive new live/work community and cultural hub well integrated with surrounding areas. The development would accommodate a mix of uses and follow best practices, maintaining public space, high standards of design and sustainability. A high quality urban design recognising the distinctive urban character of the city and providing attractive and safe cycle/pedestrian routes through and around the area will create a sense of place while embracing low car use principles (Templeton and Taubenfeld 1987). The site referred to as Nestle South, here, is the southern side of the nestle factory site. The site area is approximately 7.41 ha, which is around 40% of the overall factory area. All buildings in the site have been demolished except those in the Conservation Area which has been retained for redevelopment as part of the application. To the east of the site is the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Library, the west consists of a block of buildings including; Almond Block Extension and the Hambleton Terrace, to the north is the remaining Nestle factory site. Beyond the nestle facto ry buildings are sports pitches and Bootham Stray. To the east are Nuffield Hospital, Joseph Rowntree Theatre and Haxby Road (Dinc?er 2010). In the southern part is Sustrans Cycle path connecting Clifton with Heworth and Heworth Without. The path is an important off road link in the city and can be used by pedestrians. A number of terraced streets including Hambleton Terrace separate the site from the City Centre just over 1 km south. To the west is the residential area of Clifton connected by Wigginton Road. There is green landscaping to the west, east and southern boundaries of the site. All trees in the area are exempt from the tree preservation orders (Dinc?er 2010; Jones 2012). PROPOSAL This application seeks to convert the Cream Block and Cream Block Extension, Almond Block Extension and the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Library, as well as the progression of the remainder of the site into a development project. The project intends to construct 8 live work units; 46 two bedroom fla ts and 28 student flats. The commercial part will include Retail 974 sq m and Office 4116 sq m, the Joseph Rowntree Memorial Library as per the proposal is to be converted into a cafe. The remainder of the site will accommodate around 200 residential properties and commercial properties consisting of 5884 sq m of an office block and 1335 sq m creche, community centre and gym (Jones 2012). Two vehicular access points are

Ollege essays Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Ollege essays - Essay Example Passionate with sports and addicted to horses, I thrive upon a life of adventure and thrill. Simultaneously, academic excellence is not only my ambition, but also my history. I find it very easy to augur in with new people, and can settle down in places with ease and comfort. I am forthcoming, and look at the things which last, rather than those which are shallow. I am hoping that Bentley would be the platform through which I would be able to harness my diverse experiences, and extrapolate them into successful avenues. I am a simple person, but have an unusual approach. I like challenges, and I cherish striving for the same. Instead of achieving what I aspire for, I enjoy more in struggling for it - this has made me what I am. Having traveled all over the world and seen he taste and flavor many a credible institutes, I believe that my current choice suits best my objectives. I yearn for an environment, which would not have any discrimination, and would allow for the freedom of growth and learning. Understanding of this basic reality is crucial to the concept of social tolerance, especially in the world of today. I am confident that the setting at Bentley would be even better than promised. While Newton would primarily have referred to hard core physics, I think that even psychology would entail the first law of motion. I have felt the same first hand, wherein an event has changed the way I look at life. Hurricane Katrina has effected many people in ways that cannot be explained in words; it has taken, changed and transformed lives altogether. Notwithstanding the terrible traumas of the event, the entire ordeal has instilled a new zeal of optimism within me Previously, I used to be a firm believer in planning and organizing. I used to think that one only gets what one works for, and that there is nothing that is beyond man himself. However, this philosophy of mine was brutally challenged by Katrina, which made me realize that a Bigger Power was also there; the Grand Design, which controls and directs things in ways which are incomprehensible by the human mind. Instead of feeling belittled by the entire event, I felt stronger, as a new way and concept of destiny suddenly came to light. I now have a different definition of failure and achievement than what I used to have before. For me, achievement is not what you get, but what you strive for. Failure is not what you lose, but what you don't aim for. This has revolutionized the way I take life. Now nothing seems out of reach, and everything seems within grasp. Simply because, I do not know what is going to happen the next moment; however, I can make the most out of this moment! And this is what I would like to sustain through my life - every moment as a complete lifetime in its own right. With the might which the United States has, and all the available resources, it could not save the lives of so many. Ironically, the US was instrumental in saving lives in the Asian Tsunami and African famines, but it couldn't deliver on its own soil. This by no means is criticism on the government, but actually a realization that under this blue sky, nothing can be ruled out. No matter how one plans, the Grand Design has to come into effect. Therefore, it only makes sense to make the most out of what a person has. My enthusiasm to create a difference in the moments I have now is evermore, and my commitment is now not with goals, but with time. If I can live every moment to its fullest, in which I

Collaboration between Disney and Nature Conservancy Essay Example for Free

Collaboration between Disney and Nature Conservancy Essay Disney is a famous international company around the world. Not only for the production of cartoon and Disneyland, but also the effort that it have made in sustainable development. Disney has made high efficiency collaboration with Nature Conservancy-a famous environmental protection organization. They have worked closely with each other for decades to create the Disney Wilderness Preserve (DWP) in central Florida (â€Å"Working with Companies†, n.d.). Their collaboration was a success (â€Å"Florida, the Disney Wilderness Preserve†, n.d.), bringing positive outcomes for both business corporation and environmental protection. The research question of our group is: How Disney achieve a highly efficient collaboration with the Nature Conservancy? Disney is willing to devote a large number of money to the protection of environment with other organization, but it is a challenge for both Disney and other organization to achieve their target and high efficiency collaboration. As pointed out by Getha-Taylor (2012), â€Å"Trust is a foundational element for effective collaboration.† Without trust, Disney would not choose to partner with the Nature Conservancy. They need to make a same goal in collaboration. Besides, equal power is an important consideration for Disney and Nature Conservancy to start their programs. The high quality of value co-creation is based on the high integration and organization of resources as well as active mobilization and passion of partners. In this report, literature review and conceptual Framework will be the first part. This part is designed to review the literature that related to the research question and topic. Besides, it will outline some key ideas and theories for the collaboration between Disney and other organizations. Each literature review of team members will be selected to make an integrated which are related to the research question and topic. Then the team will draw a connection between the literature review and data coding results, to develop a preliminary conceptual framework.   Secondly, the team will make enough description for the case on Disney. In this part, the partners and partnerships for Disney will be included.   Thirdly, the methodology that used in the research will be explained. The  team will provide primary data and secondary data for readers. Also, the team will analysis the data to make it clear for readers to understand the importance of those data. Then, the team will have preliminary results for the research question. Some figures or tables will be used to describe the preliminary results.  Finally, the team will make conclusions to summarize the collaboration between Disney and other organizations. Besides, the team will answer the question: How Disney achieve a highly efficient collaboration with the Nature Conservancy? The significance and implications of high efficiency collaboration between Disney and Nature Conservancy. The team will make acknowledgement on the limitation of the study-All achievements and actions of Disney are not very up-to-date, the newest resource comes from Disney’s performance summary report in 2013. The knowledge gap of this report are scientific system to cooperate efficiently between business and NGOs, global strategies in terms of cross-sector cooperation and multi-regional and global alliance. Conclusions The collaboration between Disney and Nature Conservancy is a model for other companies to improve the efficiency in collaboration with organizations and NGOs. They have same goals and trust each other. Besides, their power are equally and Disney provides enough financial support for Nature Conservancy to build and maintain the Disney Wilderness Preserve in Florida. Those factors make the collaboration between Disney and Nature Conservancy become a high-efficiency collaboration. Disney performed efficiently in collaboration with different organizations for its strong executive force and huge spending. However, Disney has challenge in cross-cultural collaboration with other organizations. It required creativeness and multicultural background to deal with. During our research, we found a limitation. All achievements and actions of Disney are not very up-to-date; the newest resource comes from Disney’s performance summary report in 2013. The limitation may affect the accuracy and objectivity of our result to some extent. When researching on these subthemes, one of our research gaps is multi-regional and global alliance. The wetland mitigation program in  central Florida is regional, but Disney is able to do more in terms of multi-regional collaboration since there are so many things else they can do. We didn’t find so many things when it comes to how business increase efficiency when partnering with an organization that shares a different culture background The use of quantitative data analysis and qualitative data analysis are quite helpful for us to find the gap and limitations of the topic, they are efficient methods for us to analyzing the data. Disney makes more collaboration with other organizations to improve to sustainable development of itself, such as the collaboration with National 4-H Council. They make a program called Exploring Your Environment program. It provides fun, interesting and hands-on experiences to help young people learn more about the environment around them. Through Disneys support, â€Å"they were able to create the Connecting Urban Youth to the environment program using Exploring Your Environment, and Disney is now able to reach youth in six urban areas across the U.S. Besides, Disney have supported conservation projects for almost 20 years, invested in conservation programs in 114 countries† (Momdjian, 2014) and worked with forest communities to protect wildlife and critical forest habitats. In the future, Disney needs to improve the capacity in communication. Communication is the basis of Disney’s alliance learning and capacity building if they want to corporate efficiently. Alliance enables cross-section corporations to increase working efficiency. Internal development of such expertise may be too costly, inefficient, and time-consuming for most companies. As a result, ally with a partner can let Disney share information or receive feedback from their partners. A Rational Look at the Abortion Controversy Essay -- Exploratory Essay

A Rational Look at the Abortion Controversy One of the most hotly contested issues inside and outside of biomedical ethics today is abortion. The discussion received a new impetus at the release of the controversial abortion drug RU-486, "a pill to increase access to abortions and let women get them privately from their own doctor instead of facing shouting protesters at clinics."2 As is the case with all controversial issues, there are very passionate people on both sides of the fence. Unfortunately, a heated discussion on abortion can easily and quickly turn into a battle of rhetoric rather than a dialectic of reason. But the guiding light in such a discussion must always be reason, not rhetoric or other fallacies, for only reason can solve this issue and judge which side is correct. In this brief essay, I shall attempt to clear away some of the confusion present in typical abortion debates by cooling the rhetoric with reason enlightened by scientific facts. Specifically, I will examine two common pro-abortion arguments made by Mary Anne Warren and Judith Jarvis Thomson and demonstrate that they cannot stand up to rational scrutiny and therefore fail to justify abortion. I shall also use a "quadrilemma" argument similar to that of Peter Kreeft's to show that, aside from all specific argumentation, abortion cannot be morally justified. Before even beginning to discuss the issue of abortion, it is imperative to agree upon a starting point from which to reason. The fact that some people differ even about this very point tends to render the pro-abortion and the anti-abortion paradigms somewhat "incommensurable," and this is probably one major reason why people are tempted to arrive at different conclusions about this ... ...ilure is equal to an unwanted pregnancy due to rape is nothing short of ridiculous. The sexual act by nature tends towards pregnancy, i.e., that is the natural purpose of the sexual act, and any woman who engages in this act voluntarily, with or without contraception, thereby willingly opens herself to pregnancy. 20 Wilcox, "Nature as Demonic," 468. 21 Wilcox, "Nature as Demonic," 468f. 22 M. Impact of Telecommunications on National Development and Globalization

Telecommunication is the science and technology of communication at a distance by electronic transmission of impulses via telegraph, cable, telephone, radio or television. Unprecedented growth in information exchange from 281 petabytes in 1986 to 65 exabytes in 2007 has necessitated the continuous inventions by telecommunication industries to meet up with the demand and this has significantly widened up the industry over the years. Consequently, telecommunication industry has impacted positively on National development and globalization. Thus, National development can be seen as a process that involves extending the benefits of development such as constructing of roads, sinking of boreholes, building of schools, hospitals, etc to the people. National development cannot be possible without development communication, hence, telecommunication. Development communication is the use of communication in the development process. Thus, telecommunication industry has made it easier for the deve lopment agents to communicate to the people, to carryout the development programme effectivetly via Radio, Television, etc.Secondly, Telecommunication industry made communication easier, unlike the days when people depend on written letters, etc to communicate with one another. Atleast one can stay at the comfort of his/her house and reach out to someone very far from him via telephone, skype, fax, etc. Thirdly, with the aid of telecom, people get to learn new culture, languages, new ways of doing things like farming and the likes through satelites, internet, etc. All these, help in the development of the Nation.Globalisation: this is the process of internationation integration arising from the interchange of worldviews, products, ideas and other aspects of culture. It can also be seen as the fact that different cultures and economic systems around the world are becoming connected and similar to each other because of the influence of large multinational companies and of improved comm unication. Thus, telecom industry has impacted immensely to globalisation. If not for improved way of communication, that is with the invention of satelite, cable, internet, Tv, Radio, etc. There is no way someone in Nigeria will get to know what is happening in America. But with telecom, we get to learn languages, culture, make business deals, trade, etc between one country and another. Finally, three areas telecom industry has affected business marketing, communication amongst human and aided national security. The service revenue of global telecom industry was estimated to be $1. 7trillion in 2008. These services include wireless communications, communication equipments and related ancillary services such as sales and marketing of equipments, installation and repairs of gadgets. This has over the years generated over 40 million jobs globally. Reducing the mitigating effect of world economic crisis which had crumbled the world economy. Online trading activities which include Forex t rading has directly been facilitated and this has contributed immensely to the gross domestic products of the economy. There is no perfect society devoid of quarrels, misunderstanding, violence; verbal and physical. This translates into the world at large; diplomatic rows, boundary disputes, genocides, etc.Telecommunication and indeed telecom industry have made it possible to check the menace posed by communal classes and diplomatic vandetta. It becomes possible to monitor wars and other happenings within a location through the world geographical satelites. Disasters such as the Tsunami in Japan were adequately managed to prevent the extiction of the whole generations of people via relief materials donated by philantropist and other donors. Through internet, ideas, views, products, etc can be shared easily between people and from the comfort of their homes or offices.
